Päiväpeitonpuolikas - Half a counterpane

Edellisen suuren virkkaukseni, kaksinkertaisen verhon, jälkeen halusin vaihteeksi tehdä jotain isommalla koukulla ja paksummalla langalla. Varastoissani oli (ja on edelleenkin) erittäin runsaasti ohuita pellavalankoja ja niihin sopivia puuvillalankoja, joten päätin yhdistää kaikki ja tehdä niistä paksun päiväpeitonpuolikkaan sängyn jalkopäähän. Ja paksuhan siitä tuli, sitä voi käyttää vaikka mattona jos joskus sitä päiväpeittona kyllästyy katselemaan. Kokoa peitolla 113 x 225 cm, painoa 3,9 kg, kutosen koukku, parhaimmillaan 11 lankaa kerrallaan koukulla. Ja työn valmistuttua kädet vähän peijakkaan kipeinä!

After my previous large crochet work, a double layer curtain, I wanted to make something with a larger hook and thick yarn. In my yarn stocks there was (and still is) very much very thin linen yarns and matching cotton yarns, so I decided to combine all of them and make a very thick, half a counterpane into the end of our bed. And very thick it became, it can be used as a mat if I sometimes get bored into it as a counterpane. It's size is 113 x 225 cm, weight 3,9 kg, hook number 6, max 11 yarns together on hook. And after I finished this work, my hands are very, very aching.

Muodonmuutos - Transformation

Alussa oli 6-kulmio, joka oli ihan tyytyväinen olomuotoonsa.
In the beginning there was a hexagon, which was quite satisfied in its form.

Mutta mitä suuremmaksi se kasvoi, sitä enemmän siitä alkoi tuntua, että se halusi sittenkin olla 8-kulmio. Siispä se alkoi lisätä kulmia.
But when it grew larger, it started to feel that an octagon should be a better form for it. That's why it started to add corners.

Myöhemmin se huomasi että se halusi olla myös pidempi, joten se alkoi venyttää itseään. 
Later it noticed that it wanted to be longer, too, so it started to stretch itself.

Ja kasvettuaan joka suuntaan tarpeeksi, se päätyi päiväpeitoksi 120 cm leveään sänkyyn ja eli onnellisena elämänsä loppuun asti.
After i had grown enough in every direction, it ended into a counterpane on a 120 cm wide bed and lived happily ever after.

8-kulmainen päiväpeitto jämälangoista - A hexagon counterpane made of leftover yarns

Pidän kovasti ruskea-sininen väriyhdistelmästä. Siispä, koska kaikenlaisia purku- ja jämälankoja (omia ja muiden) oli nurkkiin kertynyt aivan liian paljon, päätin tehdä hieman erilaisen päiväpeiton mökille. Lankana pääasiassa puuvillalanka 1- tai useampikertaisena, virkkuukoukku nro 4, työ tehty suurimmalta osin kiinteillä silmukoilla. Peiton halkaisija 184 cm, viimeisen kerroksen pituus n. 6 m, kerroksia yhteensä 178 ja kiinteitä silmukoita tai vastaavia vähintään 80.300 kpl. Työn painoa en tiedä, mutta painava se on!

Color combination brown and blue is one of my favorite color combinations. That's why I decided to crochet a different shape of counterpane of mainly cotton yarns which early used to be something else or which were someone else's or mine leftovers. Crochet hook number 4, work is done mainly with single crochet (double crochet in Britain). This unit is 184 cm diameter, the length of last row is about 6 meters, rows 178 all together, single (double, Br.) crochets or substitutes at least 80.300. I do not know how much does this work weight, but very heavy it is!

Ihan loppuvaiheessa meni hermo kiinteisiin silmukoihin, oli pakko siirtyä nopeammin edistyvään virkkaustapaan.
Making the last rows I almost lost my mind with single (double, Br.) crochet, so I had to start making this counterpane with faster crochet method.

Tilkkupäiväpeittoja, tehty kauan sitten - Patchwork counterpanes made a long time ago

Ensimmäinen tilkkutyöni, jossa ensin ompelin suikaleet levyksi, leikkasin levyn suikaleiksi ja ompelin uuteen järjestykseen (toki olin ennen tätä tehnyt paljon muita tilkkutöitä, tässä käytin ensimmäistä kertaa tätä tekniikkaa). Koko n. 125 x 220 cm, yksittäisen tilkun koko n. 3,5 x 3,5 cm.
My first patchwork which I made by sewing stripes together, cutting into stripes again and then sewing into a new order (I had made many other patchworks before this one, here I used this technique for the first time). Size about 125 x 220 cm, one square about 3,5 x 3,5 cm.

Nuoremman tyttären peitto. Tässä ompelin ensin suikaleet pitkiksi (n. 15 m) nauhoiksi, tein niistä kahden värisiä suikaleblokkeja, leikkasin suorakulmaisia kolmioita joista sitten kasasin peitteen. Koko 160 x 200 cm.
A counterpane for my younger daughter. Here first I sewed stripes into longer (about 15 m) stripes, of which I made blocks of two different color combinations, cut into triangles which I sew into a counterpane. Size 160 x 200 cm.

Tämän samaisen peiton tyttären koira tuhosi. Kahdesti. Kuvat ovat ensimmäisen kerran jäljiltä, toisen tuhoamiskerran jälkeen peittoa ei enää saa korjattua. Valitettavasti ei kuvia tuosta toisesta tuhokerrasta.

Neliöitä ja 6-kulmioita ompelukoneella - Squares and hexagons with sewing machine

Kuopukselle piti tehdä uusi päiväpeitto kun koiruus tuhosi edellisen (siitä myöhemmin). Uutta koko sängyn peittävää peittoa tytär ei halunnut, mutta sain puhuttua sellaisen jalkopäässä pidettävän poikkipeiton, jonka lisäksi tein vielä aluspeiton jolla peitetään koko patja, myös reunat. Aluspeiton reunat tungetaan patjan alle, poikkipeitto roikkuu reunojen yli. Työssä on 1029 kpl 5 x 5 cm yksittäin ommeltua tilkkua, koko peiton koko n. 100 x 230 cm.

My youngest needed a new counterpane to replace the one her dog destroyed (more about that later). She did not want one to cover the whole bed, but I sewed her 100 x 230 cm sized one with 1029 squares sized 5 x 5 cm each. I made also one which covers the whole madrass and is kept under this one.

Nuorena tyttönä halusin tehdä jonkinlaisen tilkkutyön. Äiti opetti ompelemaan (käsin) 6-kulmioita pahvimuotin avulla. Eihän siitä koskaan mitään valmista tullut, enkä ole edes yrittänyt sen jälkeen tehdä 6-kulmioista ompelemalla mitään koska koin sen liian vaikeaksi. Kun esikoinen sitten esitti toiveen uudesta, 6-kulmioista tehdystä auringonlaskun värisestä päiväpeitosta, ilmoitin välittömästi että ei onnistu. Asiaa kuitenkin riittävästi mietittyäni totesin että voin kuin voinkin tehdä peiton ompelukoneella, ja suostuin. Peiton koko on n. 220 x 270, tilkkuja vissiin yli 500 (tilkun koko reunasta reunaan 12,5 cm) ja värejä yli 20. Peitto on niin suuri, ettei se mahdu kerralla kuvaan.

When I was young (a long, long time ago), I wanted to make some patchwork. My mother teached me to sew hexagons by hand with help of cardboard mold. I never finished the work, and have never even thought about sewing anything of hexagons because I thought it is too difficult. When my first-born told me she would like to have a sunset-colored counterpane made of hexagons, I said no. After a long consideration I noticed that I can sew hexagons with sewing machine, and i agreed to do as she wished. The size of this counterpane is about 220 x 270 cm, I believe more than 500 hexagons (the size of one hexagon is from side to side 12,5 cm) and over 20 colors. This is so big that I can not fit it in one picture.

Eiväthän nämä nyt tilkkuvirtuoosien tasolle yllä, mutta olen kyllä aika ylpeä näistä.
Probably these are not at the same level as the ones made of patchwork virtuoso, but I am quite proud of these.
