Virkattu "kahviastiasto" - A crocheted "coffee set"

Muutama vuosi sitten virkkasin äidille lahjaksi "kahviastiaston". Ohutta paperinarua, kartonkiputkea ja aaltopahvia siihen tarvittiin kakkosen koukun lisäksi ja tuollainen siitä sitten tuli. Kahvikuppeja on oikeasti 2 kpl, mutta kahta täysin samanlaista en viitsinyt alkaa esittelemään. Hieman ne ovat jo ehtineet pölyä kerätä käytön puutteessa.

Some years ago i crocheted a "coffee set" for my mother as a present. Thin paper string, cardboard pipe, corrugated cardboard and a crochet hook number 2 was needed to make these and here you can see the result. I made 2 coffee cups, but because they are totally similar, I did not take pictures of those together. Some dust this set has gathered because of the lack of use.

Hyvää ystävänpäivää! - Happy Valentine's Day!

Kerrankin sain lähetettyä ajoissa ystävänpäivätoivotukset. Silloin kun yleensä niitä lähettelen, ne lähtevät ehkä edellispäivänä, mutta nyt siis olen hyvissä ajoin niitä lähettelemässä.

Kuvissa Nextiilissä tekemiäni (ja Nextiilin myymälässä, Vihiojantie 30, Tampere, myynnissä olevia) ystävänpäiväkransseja. Kollegoiden kanssa päätettiin että tänä vuonna tehdään jotain erilaista ystävänpäiväksi (viime vuonna meillä oli eri kokoisia sydäntyynyjä), ja tämmöisiä minä siis sain aikaiseksi. Materiaalina pääasiassa paperinaru.

For the first time ever, I am sending Valentine's Day -wishes already now, more than a week before Feb 14. In these pictures you can see the wreaths I made at work (Nextiili). We decided with my colleagues that this year we shall make something different for Valentine's day (last year we made different sizes of heart cushions), and this kind of things I made. Material is mainly paper string.

In addition to paper string, here we have crocheted lace and rag.

Matelijoita - Reptiles

1970-luvulla isäni oli reissuhommissa asentelemassa vanerikoneita ympäri maailmaa. Puoli  vuotta hänellä vierähti myös Brasiliassa, josta hän matkamuistona toi mm. täytetyn kaimaanin poikasen, täytettyjä piraijoja, alkuasukkaiden myrkkynuolia ja karjapaimenen (gaucho) nahkakypärän. Tuo kaimaani aikoinaan kulkeutui minulle ja yksinään se koristi olohuoneen seinää. Aikani sitä katseltuani totesin, että minähän osaan tehdä sille kaverin, ja niin sitten tein. Virkkasin paperinarusta (Paperi Mini) melkein kopion ja täytin sen vanhoista käsityölehdistä revityllä paperisilpulla. Tuo oma tekeleeni on siis silmiä (puuhelmet) lukuunottamatta täyttä paperia. Pituutta kaverilla on kuonon päästä hännän päähän yhteensä 93 cm.

In 1970's my father traveled around the word and installed plywood machines. He spent half a year in Brazil, too, and as a souvenir he brought a stuffed baby caiman, stuffed piranhas, poison arrows of natives and a leather helmet of gauchos. After several years I got the caiman and it hanged alone on the wall of my living room. I watched it for a long time and noticed that I can make a a friend for the lonely one, and so I did. I crocheted almost a copy of the original, made it of paper yarn (Minipaper) and stuffed it with old craft magazines. We can say that the one I made is totally made of paper (except the eyes are wooden pearls). The length of the fellow I made is 93 cm from nose to tail.

Omaan versiooni halusin avonaisen suun jotta hampaat näkyvät paremmin. Ja näin tuo suu ja hampaat oli paljon helpompi tehdä.
In my version there is an open mouth because I wanted the teeth to be more visible. And it was much easier to make it so.

Mitä kello on? - What time is it?

Samoihin aikoihin, vuosia sitten, kun täällä meillä oli paperinarukukkainnostus (eikös olekin hieno yhdyssana?) vallalla, päätin tehdä jotain muuta kuin pelkkiä kukkia. Ja tavoilleni uskollisena en sitten tyytynyt mihinkään helppoon ja tavalliseen. Tuohon kelloon käytin melkein kaikki arki-illat syksystä kevääseen. Materiaalina avattu paperinaru, grillitikut, aaltopahvi, liima, muutama pätkä ohutta rautalankaa sekä kellokoneisto.

Years ago, at the same time when here in Finland people were very interested in making flowers by using paper string, I decided to make something else than flowers. And as usually happens with my works, I made something which took a long time (almost every weekday evenings from Autumn to Spring). This clock is made of paper string, kebab (sticks), corrugated cardboard, glue, some thin iron yarn and a clock mechanism.

Eihän kukaan voi tehdä aitoja - Nobody can make authentic

Vuosia sitten olivat paperinarusta tehdyt kukkaset suuren innostuksen kohteena, muillakin kuin minulla. Ensimmäisen paperinarusta tehdyn kukan näin jollain messuilla Pirkanmaan Kotityön osastolla, auringonkukka jonka keskusta oli tehty paahdetuista kahvipavuista. Siitä lähti liikkeelle omakin paperinarukukkatuotantoni. Toki ennen sitä olin tehnyt muutaman kymmenen yksinkertaista ruusua sisaren häihin pöytäkoristeiksi, mutta tuolla kerralla ei vielä innostus iskenyt, vasta se auringonkukka oli kaiken alku.

Tuota auringonkukkaa lukuun ottamatta Pirkanmaan Kotityön paperinarukukat olivat mielestäni kovin yksinkertaisia ja niissä esimerkiksi yhdistettiin päivänkakkaran lehdet pionin kukkaan. Paha virhe! Kommentoin asiasta Pirkanmaan Kotityölle, ja sieltä minulle vastattiin otsikon sanoin: "Eihän kukaan voi tehdä aitoja!" Ai ei voi, niinkö? Tai no ei sentään ihan aitoja, mutta hyvin aidon näköisiä kuitenkin. Esimerkkinä mainittakoon, että kukkakauppias-sisareni oli vähällä laittaa paperinarusta tekemäni ruusun muiden ruusujen joukkoon vesiastiaan, hän luuli sitä Mercedes-ruusuksi. Että niin aitoja... Kun alla olevia kuvia näytettiin Pirkanmaan Kotityön edustajalle, hän luuli niitä aidoiksi.

Flowers made of paper string were very popular years ago here in Finland, very many others than me. The first of this kind of flowers I saw in some fair in stand of Pirkanmaan Kotityö, local representative of Finnish craft, it was a sunflower with center made of roasted coffee beans. This was the thing which made me SO keen in making paper flowers. Sure I had earlier made tens of simple roses (made of paper string) for my sister's wedding, but the sunflower was the beginning of everything.

All the other flowers (except that sunflower) of Pirkanmaan Kotityö were, in my opinion, very simple and for example they put together leaves of a daisy and flowers of peony, which is very bad mistake. I commented it to Pirkanmaan Kotityö, and they answered me as I mentioned in heading: "Nobody can make authentic!" Nobody? Well, not exactly authentic, but yes, very much authentic looking. For example, my florist sister thought that a rose I made of paper string, was a real Mercedes rose, and she almost put it into water with other, authentic roses. So real paper flowers, indeed! When the pictures below were shown to the representative of Pirkanmaan Kotityö, she thought that the flowers were real.

"Lumihiutaleita hiljalleen, sataa maahan lumivalkoiseen..."
Niin kai, sopiihan sitä laulella kun kaikkien aikojen joulukuun lämpöennätykset menevät rikki, maa on märkä ja musta ja kasvit alkavat heräillä. No, eipä tarvitse lumitöitä tehdä.

Kuten oikeassakin elämässä, tässäkin kaikki lumihiutaleet ovat erilaisia. Virkattu ohuesta paperinarusta (Pirkanmaan Kotityö, muistaakseni nimi oli Paperi Mini) ihan omasta päästä kiskaistuilla malleilla, käytössä nro 2,5 virkkuukoukku. Näitä pystyi tekemään vain max. 6 kpl kerrallaan, ja sittenkin oli jo sormessa rakko ja muutaman päivän tauko edessä. Ajanpuutteen ja sormien väsymisen takia muutama malli jäi tekemättä, niitä ehkä joskus myöhemmin.

"I'm dreaming of a white Cristmas..."
Yes, really dreaming. Yesterday in Finland it was the warmest day in December ever, +11,3 degrees Celcius. So I had to make my own snowflakes (actually I made these some time ago) because Mother Nature isn't giving them.

As in real life, you can not find two exactly same kind of here either. These are made of thin paper string with my own instructions and hook number 2,5. I could make these only 6 pieces a day, and even then I had a blister in my finger and had to wait some days before I could continue making these.
